Was Jesus Christ married? The free believer answer

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

According to , Jesus and were , but this fact was suppressed by the early Church (pgs. 242-249). There are no ancient claims that Jesus was , even from
non-canonical writings. Luke 8:1-3 states that three women - Mary, Joanna, and Susanna - traveled with Jesus, but there is no reason to infer from this a romantic relationship between Jesus and Mary.

The “strongest” piece of evidence for a marriage is a fragmented text from the so-called Gospel of Philip, probably composed 200-plus years after the time of Jesus, which claims that Jesus used to kiss Mary. Whether these were supposed to have been platonic kisses on the cheek or forehead or romantic kisses on the mouth is unknown as the text is unreadable at this point.

It should be noted that even this highly suspect text does not claim that Jesus and Mary were .

Was Jesus Christ married? The Christian Answer

Answer: No, was not . A recent popular book, “,” speaks of Christ being to . This myth / lie is absolutely false and has no basis theologically, historically, or Biblically. While a couple of the “Gnostic gospels” mention Jesus having a close relationship with , none of them specifically states that Jesus was to , or had any romantic involvement with her. The closest any of them come is saying that Jesus kissed , which just as easily could be a reference to a “friendly kiss.” Further, even if the Gnostic gospels directly stated that Jesus was to , that would not have any authority, as the Gnostic gospels have all been proven to be forgeries invented to create a Gnostic view of Jesus.

Was Jesus Christ married? The Christian Answer

If Jesus had been , the would have told us so - or there would be some unambiguous statement to that fact. Scripture would not be completely silent on such an important issue. The mentions Jesus’ mother, adoptive father, brothers, and sisters. Why would it neglect to even mention the fact that Jesus had a wife? Those who believe / teach that Jesus was are doing so in an attempt to “humanize” Him, to make Him more ordinary - like everyone else. People simply do not want to believe that Jesus was in the flesh (John 1:1,14; 10:30). So, they invent and believe myths about Jesus being , having children, and being an ordinary human being.

Was Jesus Christ married? The Christian Answer

A secondary question would be, “Could have been ?” There is nothing sinful about being . There is nothing sinful about having sexual relations in marriage. So, yes, Jesus could have been and still be the sinless Lamb of , the Savior of the world. At the same time, there is no reason Biblically that Christ would have . That is not the point in this debate. Those who believe that Jesus was do not believe that He was sinless, or that He was the Messiah. Getting and having children is not why sent Jesus. Mark 10:45 tells us why Jesus came, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Religious Cults part3: Why Does It Matter?

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Groups like the Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses reject their categorization with other “religious ”, because the emotional reaction to such a label often gets in the way of mainstream conversion. Actually, contrary to their historical foundations of deeming Christendom to be misguided, evil or apostate, most of the aforementioned are now claiming to be Christian themselves. They declare the Divine authority of the , but they manipulate the scriptures to suit their own purposes. Although they claim to serve , and may use Christian terminology, their doctrines are dangerously different. Why is this an issue? Why can’t we all just get along? Because these organizations don’t lead to the of the , but to another Jesus and another gospel message altogether. If these religious groups are based on bad history, or bad doctrine, or bad motives, then we must respectfully expose these shortcomings. If these religious are presenting false teachings, then multitudes of people are being led astray.

Religious Cults part2: The Christian Perspective

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

Christians define religious from a different perspective. Simply, a cult is any religious group that deviates from the fundamental teachings of the historic, -based, Christian faith as confirmed through the ancient ecumenical creeds. Generally, if a religious organization follows , but denies or distorts essential Christian doctrines such as the Trinity, the resurrection, or salvation by grace alone, that organization is considered a cult. Traditional examples are the Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Science, the Unity School of Christianity, and the Way International. All of these groups add to the simple gospel of . In addition, some add to the , such as Mormonism’s The Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price. Similarly, Christian Science has added Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have actually changed the text of the to make it fit their version of doctrine.

Religious add their own rules, rituals and ceremonies — their own works of righteousness to the finished work of Jesus on the cross. These organizations officially state that Jesus’ sacrifice is sufficient for salvation, but then they go on to say that their version of “works” must be added to the simplicity of His grace in order to warrant true salvation. These groups will often use James 2:26 (”faith without works is dead”) to establish that works are part of salvation. Although it is true that faith without works is dead, it isn’t the works that save us. Works are merely the result of a truly changed life through a saving faith in Jesus. A true Christian does good works because he has received the free gift of salvation, not to get salvation.
